We don't use Google Analytics for the UF Digital Collections because the dynamic URLs tend to make for confusing stats. The model of a hit/view is still confusing, so we added the definitions page to make the counts more comparable to other statistics: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/ufdc/?m=ltd

Our stats are cleaned of robot hits, and search engine robot hits (Google's Google Search bot and UF's Google Search Box bot and all of the others).

Please let us know once your stats are out--we're always looking for good examples so we can improve. It's also difficult with the newspapers (there are cases where single issues are oddly more popular than other issues from the same paper, distorting the apparent usage of the title as a whole) and since UNT is running the Texas Digital Newspaper Program, your stats would be particularly interesting.

Do you happen to collect data with google analytics as well? It would be interesting to see that data as well. It is of course an interesting problem for digital libraries like yours to share this data, it isn't exactly like the dspace, eprints model of "record view" and "download". We are getting ready to start looking at how we process our logs to aggregate statistics on the collection level as well as the item level.

I think the volume of Overhead shown in their report is a little bit of a red herring. It merely was the dumping ground for any costs which did not comfortably fit into the other categories.

So, for instance, the LBC/IRN overheads figure include significant amounts paid to me for consultancy for their EU tendering process and outsourced rekeying of catalogue cards. There was also another consultant who did metadata advice to this project.

These don't seem to be overheads to me! I think the report would have benefitted from a wider coverage of projects, plus a more robust and closer look at the finances of those projects it did look at. My sense is that the quote "attempting to compare these two projects quantitatively is unhelpful" is not a statement of fact but a statement of the consultants inability to do that task meaningfully...

It has managed to come up with results that are both unsuprising and yet possibly misleading at the same time.

SobekPH had 25 new downloads from 12/7 - 12/13. While not the best week, that means over 100 total, and that's only so far (and with only an iPhone version available).

Of course, if anyone is wondering, UFDC had 3,078,499 pages on January 10. UFDC now has 3,434,052 pages. UFDC has added 355,553 pages in two months. That's still over 100,000 pages a month.

While this is definitely amazing progress (and the statistics are available online if anyone else wants to track daily progress), but at this rate the pages are only numbers. We're currently working on many important new projects, many important old projects, and varied problems from all projects. Processing time for problems is 10 times higher (or more) than for non-problems. As we process through problems, our page-production rate may fall even as our workload increases. These problem files are files we could never catch our breath long enough to work through. The oldest I've seen so far dates back to 2001, and that means being scanned in 2001, so people have wanted these files for almost a decade and problems created a lack of time that resulted in their delay. While we can't process the problems any faster than we're working, the joy at finishing projects that have been waiting in the wings for so long is truly thrilling.

Of course, no projects ever really end. We're working simply to finish processing and load the many materials with records that have already been scanned. New and old, historic and current, we'll load as much as we can as quickly as we can even knowing that the items are so much more than their page counts.
